London Tennis Clubs and Lessons

Tennis in London is not simply a sport to be played in the summer months but all year round due to indoor courts shielding players from the winter. Plus many London tennis clubs have all weather courts with artificial surfaces where players can enjoy lessons, coaching and social play in comfortable surroundings.

So, where are the best clubs in the London area where enthusiasts can have a hit? We look centrally and on the outskirts for all budgets.

Coolhurst Tennis and Squash Club

Located in Crouch End North London Coolhurst is one of the leading tennis clubs in the area as it offers fourteen amazing tennis courts that are floodlit and offer a variety of surfaces plus covered courts great for the Winter months. Coolhurst offer a range of packages when it comes to membership with full details available at their website.

Coolhurst facilitates playing tennis simply for the joy of it or competitively, while coaching sessions are also available here. Programmes are aimed at adults and children alike, while those looking to join a team will be pleased to learn that teams play in tournaments from club through to county level.

Junior summer camps are also arranged by the club, while all the clubs tennis coaches are LTA qualified. Members can even have their raquets restrung at the club too! Set in leafy grounds with a superb clubhouse Coolhurst also offer a great social calendar of events to all its members, while club therapists offer sessions such as massages and sports injury treatments.

The Queen’s Club

Probably London’s most famous tennis club after Wimbledon where you have the Queens ATP 500 happening just before the Grand Slam, The Queen’s Club prides itself on being one of the best racket sports clubs in the country. Facilities here are second to none and include:

27 outdoor lawn tennis courts, 10 indoor lawn tennis courts (how amazing is that!) and 32 clay indoor courts. Plenty of courts to play in during those cold and rainy winter months.

The Queen’s Club has eighteen competitive teams plus a programme of weekly social games, coaching opportunities and monthly American tournaments. The AEGON Championships are also held at the club.

Magdalen Park Lawn Tennis Club

Located close to Wandsworth Common The Magdalen Club offers eight floodlit courts for members to play on. Those who wish to play competitively can do so here as the club has six mens, five womens and four mixed teams who play not only in local league competitions but also The Surrey League and Aegon League too.

Magdalen Park members can play just for the fun of it too with many social events also available to join in off the courts. Junior tennis is also popular at Magdalen with a sports camp for six to twelve year olds and after school coaching courses run by LTA qualified professionals.

Individual or group coaching is offered for adult tennis players too as Magdalen has two full time professional coaches available.

Wigmore Lawn Tennis Club

Established in 1911 Wigmore Lawn Tennis Club is located close to Streatham and its surrounding area and enjoys the coveted Clubmark status unlike many tennis clubs in the same area. Wigmore boasts eight hundred members four hundred of which are juniors.

Facilities at the Wigmore are superb and include eight all weather courts (four clay, three porous acrylic and one synthetic grass) seven courts are floodlit, a practise wall and a lobster ball machine. Wigmore has five professionally qualified coaches (LTA)  offering group or one to one coaching whichever is your preference. All coaches are also CRB checked.

Coaching sessions available include.

1. Mini coaching for children aged 3 years to 11 years played on smaller courts with smaller raquets, nets and balls.

2. Junior coaching for those aged 11 plus

3. Adult coaching for beginners through to advanced and team players

4. Private coaching, one to one or in groups

5. Junior tennis camps that run throughout the school holidays

Hackney City Tennis Clubs

Hackney City Tennis Clubs main site is located in Clissold Park but they also run tennis sessions in Hackney Downs, Springhill, London Fields, Millfields and Aske Gardens. The Lawn Tennis Association recognises this club as a Performance Club, while they also hold The Clubmark Award.

All sessions provided by Hackney are affordable making them accessible to all players. Hackney offer a range of coaching sessions all taught by qualified professionals who are also CRB checked giving peace of mind. Mini and Junior tennis programmes are also offered and can be booked online according to age and ability.

Summer coaching camps are also provided by Hackney along with three levels of adult coaching courses. Adults can also enjoy team sessions, social sessions, ladies sessions, while sessions for those aged fifty and above are also offered for the more mature player.

Ever played cardio tennis? Hackney offer cardio tennis sessions that are a great way to get in shape and are coached by specific cardio qualified teachers. Disability tennis is also played here, while more details regarding all that is offered by Hackney can be found at the website.

The Hurlingham Club

Location: South West London

A private sports club located in South West London along the River Thames the Hurlingham Club whereby every member or guest has to be wearing tennis clothes that are at least 80% white except winter months where tracksuits can be multicoloured.

The club site itself is not exactly the best at giving away it’s information on the tennis courts and facilities available but the club does have 40 courts in total including 4 indoor courts for all year round play. Court surfaces include hard, clay and grass. Right now the waiting list is closed for new memberships which is why this club is at the bottom of the list.
